Why SSD Failure Matters More Than Most People Realise
In 2026, SSDs — particularly NVMe drives — are in essentially every MacBook, Windows laptop, and desktop computer sold in the past five years. The annualised failure rate for NVMe drives sits at approximately 14%, and data recovery specialists report a sharp rise in SSD case volumes. Data loss from SSD failure accounts for around 17% of all data loss incidents globally. For many home users and small businesses, a failed SSD is a catastrophic event that could have been prevented with early action.
Catching a failing SSD early versus dealing with a completely dead one is enormous — both in cost and in how much data can be recovered. Early action is everything.
The 8 Warning Signs Your SSD Is Failing
Not every symptom appears in every case. Any of the following warrants your attention.
Boot times that used to take 10–15 seconds now creep past two minutes? SSDs slow down as memory cells wear out or as the controller begins struggling with failing sectors.
Opening a document that used to appear instantly now takes 5–30 seconds? File transfer speeds dropping suddenly is the drive struggling to read specific cells or regions.
