Desktop problems people bring to us every week

Most desktop owners put up with a fault for longer than they should — either because they are not sure whether it is worth fixing, or they are not sure who to trust with a tower full of components.

These are the desktop faults we see constantly at our Carrum Downs workshop. If yours matches, you are in the right place.

"My desktop won't turn on at all."Power supply failure, a shorted motherboard, faulty power button or a damaged internal component are the usual suspects.
"It powers on but the screen stays black."A failed GPU, faulty RAM, cable issue, BIOS fault or motherboard problem — we test in a logical order before quoting repair.
"My gaming PC crashes mid-game."GPU instability, PSU failing under load, overheating, RAM issues or driver conflicts all cause random crashes during gaming.
"The fans are roaring and the PC is burning hot."Dust-blocked heatsinks, old thermal paste, failing fans or poor case airflow bring temperatures to dangerous levels.
"My desktop has become painfully slow."A failing hard drive, full storage, low RAM, Windows corruption or malware can grind a desktop to a halt.
"It won't boot and I need my files."We check storage health and recovery options before doing any repair work that could put your data at further risk.

Desktop repair FAQ

Common questions about desktop computer repairs

Why won't my desktop turn on?

The most common cause is a failed power supply unit. Other causes include a shorted motherboard, a faulty power button, a failed GPU preventing POST, or a damaged internal component. We run systematic power and component tests to find the exact cause before recommending any parts.

Is a desktop repair worth it?

It depends on the age of the machine, the cost of the repair and what you use it for. A $120 PSU replacement on a five-year-old desktop that still runs well is almost always worth it. A motherboard fault on a ten-year-old entry-level machine may not be. We compare the numbers honestly before you commit to anything.

Can you fix a gaming PC that keeps crashing?

Yes. Gaming PC crashes are commonly caused by GPU instability, a PSU that cannot sustain load, overheating under sustained load, unstable RAM, driver conflicts or a failing storage drive. We run load testing and diagnostics to identify which component is at fault rather than replacing parts on assumption.

Can you recover data from a desktop that will not boot?

In many cases, yes. If the storage drive itself is intact, data can often be recovered even if Windows will not start. We assess the drive health before doing any repair work that could put your files at risk. For more complex cases, we can discuss data recovery options separately.

Can you upgrade an old desktop with an SSD and more RAM?

Yes. An SSD upgrade is one of the most cost-effective improvements for an older desktop and can make a significant difference to everyday speed. We check compatibility, carry out the upgrade and migrate your Windows installation so you do not lose anything.

Do you repair custom-built PCs?

Yes. Custom builds can have issues that off-the-shelf machines do not — bad cable connections, incompatible parts, incorrect BIOS settings or unstable overclocking. We diagnose custom PCs with the same systematic approach, including component-level testing under load.

Do you repair business desktops and workstations?

Yes. We service business desktops, office towers and professional workstations used for CAD, engineering, video editing and general business computing. If you have multiple machines or a small office setup, call us to discuss the best approach.

Do I need to book before bringing in a desktop computer?

Bookings are recommended — especially for large tower cases or same-day turnaround requests — as they allow us to plan workshop time and prepare. Walk-ins are welcome during business hours. Call 03 8759 1801 or book online before you come in.

Not sure whether your desktop is worth repairing?

Bring it to Macrotech Solutions in Carrum Downs. We will assess the fault, explain the options and tell you honestly whether repair, upgrade or replacement makes sense — before you spend a cent.
